09 April 2024Help needed for the Thornton Steward Spring Fair, 4th May, 10:30am - 2pm!

Hi everyone

We are now planning our spring fair event due to be held at the start of May and are looking from some help and support for you all to make this a successful event for the village.

Our plan is to run this from 10.30 - 2.00pm on the Saturday and we will be advertising this event outside of the village to attract more attendees.

We want to have a plant stall, book stall, tombola/raffle, games such as splat the rat and a treasure hunt, lucky dip for the children (of all ages), a produce stall with cakes, jams, chutneys etc. for sale, as well as offering refreshments on the day. We will also have a general stall for items to sell but not jumble.

So our request is as follows:-

Are there any people who could volunteer to help man any of the stalls on the day?

Also, we will be seeking donations for all of the stalls, specifically plants, produce, cakes and bakes, books, other items for sale, tombola prizes and items suitable for a lucky dip.

If you are able to support with any of the above, please let Alison know either by email or phone (01677 460135). We will confirm where / when to bring your donations closer to the time.

This is a great opportunity to enjoy the village community and share our lovely village with others for a few hours as well as raising funds for the village to support its ongoing needs.

Thanks in advance.

09 January 2024Energy Efficiency - Home Upgrade Grants are now available. Find out whether you are eligible!

The following information has been sent to the Parish Clerk by North Yorkshire Council, to alert us to the availability of grants which could help make our homes warmer and more energy efficient. Click here to see a poster summarising this information.

A new grant is available for North Yorkshire residents to help make homes more energy efficient.

The Home Upgrade Grant phase 2 (HUG2) is available to help homes that are not on mains gas and have poor quality insulation and inefficient heating systems.

The grant can be used for improvements such as insulation and solar panels to air source heat pumps and smart heating controls.

These will help save money on energy bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

To qualify for the new scheme residents must have a household income of £31,000 or less and/or meet other eligibility checks.

Properties must also be technically suitable for the measures available in the scheme and have a low energy efficiency rating (between D and G on an energy performance certificate).

Private rented properties are eligible to apply although landlords must contribute at least a third of the total cost of the upgrade.

This scheme is now open and we are working with community interest company YES Energy Solutions who will deliver the improvements to homes.

They can be contacted by calling 01422 880 100 or visit the YES energy solutions website to find out more. You can also visit our website www.northyorks.gov.uk/hug2 to register your details to find out more about the scheme.

02 December 2023Enquiry about the origin of 'Arklow Hill'

The website has received the following enquiry from Mr Pat Power. If anyone has any information which could help in his research, he would be most grateful if you could contact him using the email address below.

Hello from Pat Power,  Arklow,  Co Wicklow, Ireland.

I am doing some research into other ‘Arklow's. So far, there are three as well as my home town of Arklow. They are in Co Wexford, Ireland, an Arklow Hill near the village of Crosby Garrett, in Cumbria and your community in Thornton Steward. Would anyone in the heritage or local history community in Thornton Steward throw any light on the origin of the name Arklow Hill? I have the derivative for the other three but yours has eluded me.

Any help or suggestion in further research would be greatly aAppreciated.

Yours faithfully
Pat Power (Mr)

22 November 2023Christmas Carol Service and Decorating the Church

Whilst there are still a few shopping days left until Christmas, there is a date for the diary which needs a mention.

Friday, 8th December 2023 at 18:30 sees this year’s Christmas Carol Service in our very own St. Oswald’s church. The traditional service is a lovely start to the festive season and features Christmas Carols accompanied by an organist in the beautifully decorated church. Please join us all on this special occasion for the service followed by mulled wine and mince pies generously provided by our neighbours.

Any willing volunteers who can spare some time and join the merry band on the morning of Thursday, 7th December (from 9:30am) would be extremely welcome to help decorate the church.

Given the super weather we have been having, car parking is extremely limited and so we ask that this is restricted to those who really need it.

05 November 2023'Trim the Institute' evening, with Mulled Wine, Pie and Peas!

As we fast approach the Christmas season, we invite you to join in decorating the Institute, having a glass of mulled wine and enjoying pie and peas with your neighbours.

Please click here for more details and RSVP to Alison with your choice of pie by Monday 27th November.

01 November 2023POSTPONED - Pie & Peas Supper and Games Night in The Institute

Further details will be available in due course.

23 September 2023Percy Sadler, former resident of Thornton Steward

The website received an email two days ago, letting us know the sad news that Percy has passed away peacefully, following a long illness. His funeral is at 11am on 2nd October at Kirkleatham Crematorium.

Percy was born in Thornton Steward in 1931 and he lived here until he decided to join the police force and move to the north east at the age of 27.

He was very fond of the village and sent warm Christmas greetings to us all in 2020, followed by some wonderful poems, which he kindly agreed could be published on the website. They can be found by clicking the following link:
