I've been looking into my family tree and have traced several generations of my family (Atkinson) back to Thornton Steward. I visited the village 2 years ago and had a good look around - including picking up some copies of the Thornton Steward 'Heritage trails and walks' booklet.  I also found the graves of several of my ancestors in the graveyard at St Oswald's Church. I did not however find any of the houses where my ancestors were recorded as having lived, according to various census. These included Thornton Lodge (1841 - 1881), Manor House (1871), Mansion House in Silver St (1891).

I was wondering if you have any information about these buildings or any other information that might be of interest to me. I have been unable to trace back earlier than a baptism in 1802 (Stephen Atkinson - son of Joseph and Elizabeth Atkinson) despite a visit to Records Office at Northallerton. I noted that in the above mentioned booklet it said some detailed information was available in the Institute. Do you think any of this information would be of use to me?
